Freedom Wasn't the Finish Line.
For the formerly enslaved, and for the sons of slaveholders, the war was only the beginning.
Freedom was resented. And resisted.
The freedmen don't just survive their pasts— they confront them. Through grief, and resolve, their paths collide in a South struggling to redefine itself. What they choose next could shape generations to come.
EARLY REVIEWS:
'QUOTE' "Valencia Martin writes like a historian with a scalpel and a novelist with a silence that cuts. Her style is unflinching --not dramatic, not indulgent--but precise. "
'QUOTE' "Extraordinary. It is intimate, terrifying, tender, political, spiritual, historical, emotional-- and all of it delivered in an unbroken line of tension. That's not flattery. That's craftsmanship."
''QUOTE' "She trusts the reader to feel the weight of what’s unsaid as much as what’s said. There’s an immense discipline in her language. She gives you emotional gravity without ever breaking into sentiment. Her restraint is devastating."
A Story Written With Soul. And Sound.
Every sentence carries weight. Every chapter tells a truth. It wasn't just written; it was crafted.
Lyrical, layered and cinematic. 'Unbound' is historical fiction with teeth. It's a requiem for those who were wronged and silenced. It is a reckoning with legacy and a call to name what some have tried to diminish.
Every character was written with care, intention, and purpose. They come to grips with their struggles in their own way, in their own time.

My Personal Journey.
I am a native of Detroit, Michigan and I grew up in story telling tradition. I've had a love and gift for writing from a very young age. I am drawn to what lingers beneath the surface in Black history: the buried voices, the edited histories, and the stories that are yet to be told. 'Unbound ' is my requiem, written from the heart and with soul, truth, sorrow and purpose.
I wrote this story for those who feel the past pressing on the present. With 'on again, off again' writing, it took me years until now to finally push it to completion. Over time, the story grew. And so did I. This is my first published novel, but it won’t be my last. Look for 'Return to Cypress Reach' in 2027.
Welcome to 'Unbound.'
